How to Make an Extra $500 a Month Flipping Stuff

An extra $500 a month is one of the most realistic goals in flipping. It doesn’t take a big budget, special skills, or quitting your job. It’s practice, timing, and knowing what something’s worth.

Here’s how to actually get there.

Do the math first

$500 a month is a lot less scary when you break it down:

  • 10 flips at $50 profit each, or

  • 5 flips at $100 profit each, or

  • 2 or 3 bigger flips at $200–$250 each

That’s one or two flips a week. Very doable for someone working full-time.

Pick items that make $50–$150 a flip

You want things that are common, easy to sell, and have a decent margin. Good starting points:

Start with one category. Learning one niche well is how you get consistent.

Start with free stuff if money is tight

If you don’t have money to put in, flip free stuff first. Every sale is pure profit and it builds your starting cash. How to Flip Free Stuff shows you how.

A weekly routine that fits around a job

  • All week: deal alerts running in the background so you aren’t scrolling. When one hits, message right away. See How to Set Up Deal Alerts.

  • Evenings: pick up one or two items

  • One night a week: clean, stage, photograph, and list everything you bought

  • Weekend: meet buyers, deliver, pick up more

That’s maybe 4–6 hours a week once you get the hang of it.

The things that actually get you to $500

See deals first. Most great deals are gone fast. If you’re not seeing them, you’re not bad at flipping, you’re late. Being early is the single biggest factor. Tools like DealScout help a lot here, but you can also start by refreshing and training the algorithm.

Know what it’s worth before you buy. That’s the difference between a $100 profit and a couch you give away for free. Read How to Know What Something Is Worth.

Sell fast, don’t chase home runs. A $50 profit this week beats a $150 profit that sits for a month. See How to Price Your Flips So They Actually Sell.

Reinvest at the start. Put your first few profits back into the next flips. More cash means you can grab bigger deals with bigger margins.

Got a truck? It’s even easier

A truck opens up big items (couches, sectionals, patio sets, appliances) that most people can’t move, which is exactly why they’re cheap. You can also charge for delivery. See How to Make Extra Money With a Truck.

After $500

Once you can hit $500 a month consistently, you can take it as far as you want. Add a second category, follow the seasons, and build systems. That’s all in How to Grow Flipping From a Side Hustle to Full-Time.
