How to Flip Patio Furniture

Patio furniture has been my main niche for years, and it’s one of the best things to flip if you have a truck. Tons of patio sets sell for next to nothing because most buyers can’t move them. And it’s seasonal, which means there’s a time to buy cheap and a time to sell high.

What holds value (and what doesn’t)

  • Wrought iron and heavy metal sets: barely change over time. With a new coat of paint they look brand new. These are great flips.

  • Cast aluminum: light, doesn’t rust, holds value well.

  • Teak and hardwood: holds value, and a cleaning and oiling makes it look new.

  • Wicker and resin wicker: looks great at first, but wears out fast. Be pickier here.

  • Cheap plastic sets: not worth much, new or used.

Learn the brands in your area that hold value too. A few sell for a lot more used than most.

Look for sets you can split

Big sectional patio sets can often be split into two smaller sets and sold separately for more. I’ve bought a big patio couch set for around $250 that I could split into two sets and sell for about $400 each. Look at the pieces, not just the set.

How to find patio deals

  • Set an alert for “patio” or “outdoor furniture.” One word pulls in every patio set, table, and chair. See How to Set Up Deal Alerts.

  • Watch the free section at the end of summer. People give sets away to clear the patio.

  • When you message, lead with “I can come now” and “I have a truck.” If you’re late on a free set, offer to pay: “I’ll pay $50 and come now with a truck. Can I get the address?” See Facebook Marketplace Messaging.

Be careful, though. Patio sets are a common scam listing. Check that the photos match your area and the seller’s profile looks real. I once drove 40 minutes to an address with no patio set. See How to Spot a Facebook Marketplace Scam.

How to fix it up

  • Clean everything. Pressure wash or scrub frames and tabletops.

  • Paint metal frames. Sand off loose rust, then use an outdoor spray paint made for metal.

  • Replace cushions. Old, faded, or moldy cushions kill a set. New covers or cushions can bring it back to life.

  • Replace missing hardware like feet caps and bolts.

  • Oil wood furniture so it looks rich, not gray.

How to sell it

Stage it outside on a patio or nice lawn in daylight. Show the whole set and each piece. List the number of pieces, materials, and whether cushions are included. Offer delivery for $20–$40. See How to Take Photos and Write Listings That Sell.

Timing is everything

Patio furniture moves in the warm months, for buyers and sellers. Buy in fall and winter when people are clearing out, and sell in spring when everyone’s getting their yard ready. If you have space to store sets, the difference can be huge. See Seasonal Flipping.
