How to Flip Grills

Grills are one of my favorite seasonal flips. People get rid of them because they’re dirty, they bought a new one, or they’re moving. A lot of the time, all a grill needs is a deep clean and maybe a cheap part.

What sells

  • Gas grills from well-known brands. Some brands hold value really well and sell fast used. Learn which ones in your area.

  • Flat-top griddles are popular right now

  • Pellet grills and smokers can sell for a lot, but check the electronics

  • Charcoal grills sell, but for less

What to check before you buy

  • Firebox: rust is normal, but rust-through (holes) on the main body is a dealbreaker

  • Burners: look for holes or rust-through. Burners can usually be replaced, so price it in.

  • Grates: heavy rust or flaking means replacing them

  • Igniter: test it. Igniters are cheap to replace, but it’s a negotiating point.

  • Hose and regulator: look for cracks

  • Wheels, doors, and side tables: check they’re all there and solid

  • Pellet grills: plug it in and make sure the controller, auger, and fan come on

If you find problems that weren’t in the listing, use them to negotiate. See How to Negotiate When Flipping.

How to clean a grill

  1. Burn it off on high for 15 minutes (if it works)

  2. Scrape and brush the grates, or soak them in degreaser

  3. Pull the grates and flavorizer bars and scrape out the inside of the firebox

  4. Empty and clean the grease tray

  5. Degrease and wipe down the outside. Stainless cleaner on stainless parts.

  6. Touch up the outside with high-heat grill paint if it’s faded

Cheap fixes that add value

  • New grates

  • New burners or flavorizer bars

  • New igniter

  • New knobs

  • A grill cover

Replacement parts for popular brands are easy to find. A $40 part can turn a $50 grill into a $200 grill.

When to buy and sell

Buy in fall and winter when people are clearing out patios. Sell in spring and summer. The weeks before Memorial Day, the Fourth of July, and Labor Day are great. See Seasonal Flipping.

How to sell

Show it clean, with the lid open, plus a photo of the inside and the burners lit if you can. List the brand, number of burners, fuel type, and what you replaced. Include whether a propane tank comes with it. Offer delivery if you have a truck. See How to Take Photos and Write Listings That Sell.

Grills pair well with patio furniture. Same buyers, same season.
