How to Flip Washers, Dryers, and Fridges

Updated: 3 hours ago
Appliances sell all year. Everybody needs a washer, dryer, and fridge, and most people can’t afford new or can’t wait for delivery. On the buying side, people upgrading or moving want the old one gone, fast. That’s the gap.
Cheap appliances almost always benefit from a deep clean. Sometimes that’s all it takes.
You need a truck (and a dolly)
Appliances are heavy. A truck, an appliance dolly, and straps are basically required. If you don’t have a truck, see How to Flip Stuff Without a Truck for smaller options.
What sells best
Matching washer and dryer sets (they sell for more together)
Stainless steel fridges
Front-load and top-load washers from well-known brands
Newer models with modern features
Mini fridges and chest freezers (easy to move, lots of buyers)
How to test before you buy
Ask the seller if you can see it running. A real seller with a working appliance usually won’t mind.
Washers
Run a quick cycle if it’s hooked up. Make sure it fills, agitates, drains, and spins.
Check for leaks underneath
Smell inside the drum and check the door seal for mold (front loaders especially)
Dryers
Run it a few minutes and make sure it actually gets hot
Listen for squeaking or thumping
Check if it’s electric or gas. Gas dryers need a gas hookup, which limits your buyers.
Fridges
If it’s running, make sure the fridge is cold and the freezer is frozen
Check the seals on the doors
Make sure the ice maker and water dispenser work (if it has them)
Look for rust and cracked shelves or drawers
Moving a fridge
Move fridges upright if you can. If you have to lay one down, let it stand upright for several hours before you plug it in so everything settles back where it should be. Tape the doors shut.
Clean it up
This is where you make your money.
Degrease and wipe down the outside
Clean washer drums with a washer cleaner and wipe the door seal
Clean out dryer lint traps and the vent opening
Wash fridge shelves and drawers, and clean the coils
Remove stickers and magnet residue
A dirty $50 washer and a clean $250 washer are often the same washer.
How to sell
Shoot it clean, in good light, with the doors open
Take a video of it running
List the brand, model, size, and capacity
Say “tested and working” (only if you tested it)
Offer delivery. Most appliance buyers need it. Hauling away their old one for an extra fee is a great add-on. See How to Make Extra Money With a Truck.
Don’t forget AC units
Portable and window AC units are appliances too, and they’re one of the best seasonal flips. See How to Flip AC Units.
